What You'll See Underwater

Marine Life in Komodo

From majestic mantas and reef sharks to tiny nudibranchs and ghost pipefish — Komodo's waters are a diver's paradise, packed with biodiversity at every depth.

Komodo

Mantas & Rays

Manta Point and Makassar Reef are two of Komodo's premier manta sites, where oceanic and reef mantas gather at cleaning stations year-round. Dive alongside wingspans exceeding four metres, and keep an eye out for mobula ray squadrons, spotted eagle rays, and the rarely seen marble ray.

Marine Life

Turtles

Green and hawksbill turtles are a near-guaranteed sighting at sites like Tatawa Besar and Siaba, where they graze on sponge-covered walls and rest under coral ledges. Look for olive ridleys in the open blue during drift dives — Komodo is one of the few places where all three Indo-Pacific species overlap.

Komodo Reefs

Sharks

Current-swept channels like Shotgun and Cauldron funnel nutrients that attract blacktip, whitetip, and grey reef sharks — often in groups of a dozen or more. At deeper sites like Castle Rock, bamboo sharks rest on the reef flat while grey reefs patrol the blue edge, offering photographers unforgettable encounters.

Coral Reefs

Over 260 hard coral species blanket Komodo's reefs, with towering barrel sponges, whip corals, and Dendronephthya soft corals painting every wall in pink and orange. Sites like Batu Bolong and Crystal Rock consistently rate among the world's healthiest reef systems, with coral cover exceeding 70 percent in sheltered bays.

Komodo

Macro Magic

Muck spots like Wainilu and the sandy slopes of Torpedo Alley reward patient divers with pygmy seahorses on gorgonian fans, ornate ghost pipefish mimicking crinoids, and dozens of nudibranch species. Komodo's macro diversity rivals the Lembeh Strait — but with world-class reefs just minutes away.

Underwater topography in Komodo

Underwater

Topography

Komodo's volcanic origins created dramatic underwater landscapes: the twin pinnacles of Crystal Rock and Pillarsteen shoot up from 30 metres, Batu Bolong's seamount drops vertically into the abyss on all sides, and the caverns at Three Sisters offer atmospheric swim-throughs. No two sites look or feel alike.
